New Business Cards and Some Coaster Curtains

Last month I attended Alt Summit, and in preparation I created some new business cards.  I really liked the cards I'd been using, but I felt it was time for something new.  And if you are ever going to bring your business card A-game, Alt Summit is the place to do it!  Check out some of the great business card round-ups at the bottom of this post!

I decided to go with double-sided round cards this year, which allowed me to use some of my new hand-drawn mandalas as part of the design.  My original plan was to give, in addition to the cards, a set of coasters to everyone I met, so I had these printed also.

They came back from the printers considerably thinner than I had imagined, so I held on to them instead of handing them out.  The other day I had the idea to use them as curtains, so I punched a bunch of holes in them and strung them together with some simple rings.

It has been a dark, cold winter here in Memphis, but yesterday the sun finally shined!  I hung them from a tension rod and let the sun shine though!

Such a lovely visual.  I couldn't help getting a little artsy with some photos!

I hope the sun is shining brightly where you are today!

True Colors Blog Tour Round-Up

Oh, you guys!  Did you follow along and catch all of the great projects featured in the Free Spirit True Colors Blog Tour?  What an absolute delight to see how some of my favorite quilters and sewists handled my newest fabrics lines, True Colors and Wishing Well!

Katy Jones from I'm a Ginger Monkey never disappoints!  She has done some really cool things with my fabrics in the past, and I loved her work on this project!  I really love the romance of this photo!

The next stop (featuring my fabrics) was at Sew4Home, where they shared a tutorial for this adorable Bedside Caddy! I think I've said this before, but I love every single thing they do on that site!  The projects are always fabulous, and the photography just blows me away!  It's always a thrill to see how they work with my fabrics!

Diary of A Quilter was the next stop, and WOW, look at this!!  I loved this so much because when I was designing my True Colors line, I made a special effort to try and include as many different colors from the spectrum as possible.  I was so happy to see that Amy chose to use them in this way!  Plus, I've always loved projects featuring the Dresden circle!

Final stop... 100 Billion Stars!  Melissa is the best!  She works with me on almost all of my fabric collections, and creates lots of the samples I take to market.  She's so creative, and she always surprises me with her unique uses of my fabrics.  She also makes sure every quilt is cat-tested and approved!

Alt Summit 2014-- Exactly Where I Needed to Be!

I'm back from Alt Summit, and as usual, I can't say enough good things about this conference!  This was my third time to attend, and this year I felt more relaxed and at home than ever before.  Over the years I've gotten to know so many of the attendees that Alt now feels like a really fun family reunion!

Alt Summit 2014

I shared a room with Monica Lee, and she is the best roommate a girl could have!  You've listened/watched her on Smart Creative Women, right?  Well, every day of the conference we set aside time to talk about the day's events and the things we learned.  It was great having her there to bounce ideas off of, and to help me figure out my plan of attack for 2014!  She is also quite the party girl!

Monica Lee and Jenean Morrison-- Alt Summit 2014

For those who don't know, Alt Summit is a design conference geared toward bloggers.  That being said, I'm not what you might call a traditional blogger yet there is tons of information that is applicable to me as an artist.  You meet lots of artists, designers, shop owners and photographers, as well as people from all creative fields.  We learn about social media and blogging as a way to grow our businesses and connect with our communities.  I always learn from the classes-- check out the Alt schedule-- but I also learn from conversations and connections.   For me, this year was all about the connections.

Monica Lee and Jenean Morrison-- Alt Summit 2014

There is a generous, giving spirit among the women at Alt.  Everyone is open and willing to answer questions and share information.  There isn't a competitive feeling in the air-- just an overall excitement about learning, growing and meeting new people.  It feels like we are all contributing to a big, amazing collaborative project!  I love this picture below from the Cricut party, where we were all asked to wear green.  I can imagine other events where seven women show up wearing the same dress-- "oh, the horror" they might say!  But not at Alt!  They celebrated their adorable matching dresses from Target!

Alt Summit 2014-- seven happy girls, same gorgeous dress.

I love seeing the same dress styled seven different, unique ways!  So cute!

In addition to meeting tons of awesome, talented, hard-working women, you get to meet fabulous sponsors!  On the Wednesday nights before the conference starts, the sponsors take us out to dinners.  I chose to dine with Cricut at the Melting Pot, and what a great choice it was!  I got to meet the super-cool Cricut team, hang out and chat with Rachel Faucett of Handmade Charlotte, Mindy (pictured above third from left) from Mindy Joy Media, Ana from We Love Citrus, among many others!

Alt Summit 2014-- Cricut party!

And to top off the great meal and wonderful conversations, Cricut gave us all new Cricut Explore machines!!!!  There aren't enough exclamation points to convey my excitement about this machine and the fact that I'll be getting one in a couple of weeks!  As you probably know from my Quilt Market booths and my Creative Bug classes, I am passionate about no-sew projects using fabrics.  This machine is going to open up a whole new world!  I can cut paper, fabric, iron-on, cardstock, even leather, all using my own designs!

There is a lot going on at the conference, and it is three full days of parties, meals, classes and networking. This year I made a special effort to take care of myself and tend to my own needs as an introvert.  I know I am a better when I am well-rested and make time for myself.  Sometimes that means heading back to the hotel room for a quick mid-afternoon nap.  Sometimes it means sneaking off to a quiet table, hiding (or trying to hide) behind a plant and devouring some cheesecake!

Alt Sumit 2014-- Jenean Morrison + delicious cheesecake.

People say you need to make the most of these conferences... take in every minute.  I agree, but over the years I've learned to carve out some alone-time.  I also padded the trip a little by coming in the day before the conference and leaving the day after.  Monica and I spent Saturday afternoon relaxing, and that evening we had a lovely dinner (filled with tons of strategizing) with Sarah Jane!  Not only did I come back this year feeling inspired, I also feel refreshed and ready to go!  2014 is off to a great start!

I'm leaving for Alt Summit in gorgeous Salt Lake City in the morning!  It is such an inspiring and fun event-- I can't wait!  In addition to all of the regular Alt goodness, I'll get to spend time with two of my faves, Monica Lee and Khristian Howell-- these women always inspire and motivate me!  What a great way to start the new year!

Wednesday night I'll be going to a dinner sponsored by Cricut-- I love them!  And I cannot wait to meet the teams from two of my favorite apps, Studio Design and Flipboard!  I'll give you a full report upon my return-- you know, after a little recovery time!

True Colors + Creative Bug + Sew4Home

True Colors is my newest collection for Free Spirit Fabric!  I'm so excited about it, and as always I can't wait to see how you incorporate it into your sewing and quilting!  The collection runs the full spectrum of colors, and I've included lots of small-scale, allover prints that work well with all of my other fabric collections!  Heather, Joel, Anna Maria and I all contributed collections to the True Colors program.  We each interpreted the theme in our own ways, and I love how different and unique each collection is!

In support of the new collections, Free Spirit has teamed up with both Creative Bug and Sew4Home!  I worked with Creative Bug--nicest people ever, I swear!-- to create a set of tutorials for no-sew party decor!

I'll let you know when the videos are up!  In the meantime, please join us for this super-fun blog tour starting Monday, January 20th!  The tour kicks off at Sew4Home and it will include all kinds of cool giveaways!  I love everything Sew4Home does, so this is sure to be awesome!

Free Beechwood Park Quilt Pattern

Great news-- April from Prairie Grass Patterns has created the most gorgeous Beechwood Park quilt pattern for you guys!  I'm so happy to share this!  Click on the image below to download the pattern.

I LOVE April's work.  She has created several quilts and patterns using my fabrics in the past, and they have always been well received!   You guys probably remember this gorgeous quilt that she made with In My Room fabrics.  I love this one so much!  She offers the Leaflet pattern here in her shop.

For my Grand Hotel fabric collection, April made the "Big City" quilt pattern, variations of which ended up in two Quilt magazines!!   Here I am in front of the cover quilt for Simple Quilts and Sewing.

I feel such a connection to April and her work!   It is always fun to see how quilt designers use my fabrics, and April never disappoints!

By the way, several of my favorite shops are carrying the Beechwood Park collection in full!  Visit Quilt Home and Jimmy Beans Wool to find the entire line!  And it's not too late to stock up on In My Room-- both shops still have the whole collection in stock!
